I won´t be gagged, warns France coach Domenech

Under scrutiny France manager Raymond Domenech told the country s footballing authorities on Tuesday that he will never be a yes man, warning that he did not intend to change his methods.

Domenech narrowly survived the sack despite France s poor showing at Euro 2008 and a very public gaffe made on TV after the team s defeat against Italy.

But in order to keep his job and prepare the national squad for 2010 World Cup qualifiers in September, Domenech had strict working conditions imposed on him by the French Football Federation (FFF).

Despite these new conditions, which limit Domenech s role to on-pitch activities and reports that he is to be assisted by former international midfielder Alain Boghossian, the 56-year-old insisted he would not be gagged.

The season started rather shakily for the defending champions with poor performances and results leading to dressing room problems and spats between the players and manager Niko Kovač, but as the campaign progressed they found their feet and started going down the right track again. For a long time it seemed they might yet be pipped to the title this time by Borussia Dortmund, but they overtook their practically only rivals in style by beating them 5-0 in early April. They will, however, be regretting their Champions League…

Sahin satisfied with form spike

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin said he is recapturing his best form after starring in the 5-1 victory over Freiburg on Saturday.

The Turkey international has struggled to replicate the performances he put in during his first spell for the club since leaving for Real Madrid in 2011.

A subsequent loan move to Liverpool failed to bear fruit, but he is confident that he is now approaching top form, having scored twice in the rout of Christian Streich s side.

I think I ve been improving bit by bit since coming back to Dortmund, even in training. Now the self-confidence is slowly returning and I’m more comfortable with my game too, he told Bundesliga.com.

My game is all about risks and I m allowed to show that here. The coach doesn t only allow it,…

Puskas Award winner quits football – to become a gamer

Just months after beating the likes of Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez to the Puskas Award, Wendell Lira has quit football to become a gamer.

The Brazilian scored just six times in an injury-plagued professional career, but his acrobatic strike for Goianesia against Atletico-GO in 2015 was named as FIFA s goal of the year at the Ballon d Or gala in January.

After leaving Vila Nova in May, Wendell has opted to retire from the sport in order to pursue a second dream career by linking up with a YouTube channel as a gamer in the lucrative esports industry.

I define my life in two dreams one possible and another almost impossible, the 27-year-old told Globo Esporte.

One was to be a player and have achievements, which is difficult because, in Brazilian football…

Deschamps keen to avoid the hype

France coach Didier Deschamps does not want the big-match build-up to consume his players ahead of the Euro 2016 opener against Romania.

Deschamps men will play their first competitive fixture for almost two years before an expectant home crowd at the Stade de France on Friday.

Saint-Denis was the scene of their glorious triumph over Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final and, having also won this trophy on home soil in 1984, Deschamps has a squad brimming with enough talent and promise to convince the natives that history might be set to repeat itself once more.

But the former Juventus midfielder, who captained France the last time they were champions of Europe in 2000, believes his players would be unwise to buy into the hype ahead of a game that should set their p…

Gerrard talks up ´best ever´ Liverpool´s title chances

Steven Gerrard branded the current Liverpool side the best he d played in after the Merseysiders ended 2008 as Premier League leaders after thrashing Newcastle 5-1 here at St James Park.

Liverpool haven t been crowned champions of England since 1990 an interminable wait for a club that has won the domestic title a record 18 times.

Reds captain Gerrard knows better than most people at Anfield the dangers of raising hopes which end in painful failure.

However, such was his self-belief following Sunday s away win, where he scored twice himself, the England midfielder felt able to joyfully talk up his side s prospects.

This is the best team I have played with, said Gerrard, a one-club man.

You look around the dressing room and from the keeper to…
